- To fix the eyes upon; to see with attention; to observe with care.
Behold the lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world. John 1.
- To look upon; to see.
BEHO’LD, v.i. To look; to direct the eyes to an object.
- To fix the attention upon an object; to attend; to direct or fix the mind.
Rev 3:20 says this in regards to the word “behold”.
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. The word is much used in this manner for exciting attention, or admiration. It is in the expressing command, or exhortation; Not just some a word of mere exclamation.
“Behold” is in the bible 1326 times in 1275 verses
As best that I can count, Jesus specifically uses the word “behold” 77 times.
Jesus has made it very clear in his word that we, as born again believers, and those that are not born again, need to take heed when this word “behold” is used.
We need to:
- Pay attention.
- Observe with care.
- Direct our eyes and ears to what God is saying to us in His Word.
- Direct our mind to the subject.
We need to just clear our mind of the chaos in our lives “Behold” Our God!
Praise God that we have something to behold Amen. Praise God that we have a Saviour that gives us much reason to behold Him!
- His power
- His righteousness
- His Glory
- His forgiveness
- His Victory
- His Majesty
And Praise God we can behold him for his love
1 John 3:1 says this….Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
Now, to understand what is going on here, the previous scriptures up to this point make it very clear that Jesus was dealing with the religious crowd!
He was speaking to the:
They were looking for a reason to reject him and have occasion against Jesus.
And now, they figured they could ask for a sign to prove him! But they really just wanted to find fault.
Jesus has already:
- Healed a possessed man
- Restored a mans withered hand.
And many other miracles and signs, but he also has:
- Pronounced judgement on them.
- Exposed their hypocrisy.
- Accused them of the unforgivable sin. (Mark 3:28-30 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme: But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation: Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit.)
So, they once again, just wanted to find fault in him!
So, Jesus says this to them when they asked for a sign…
Matt 12:39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:
What was this sign? Jonah 2:1-7
Jonah 2:1 Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish’s belly,
Jonah 2:2 And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, [and] thou heardest my voice.
Jonah 2:3 For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.
Jonah 2:4 Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
Jonah 2:5 The waters compassed me about, [even] to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.
Jonah 2:6 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars [was] about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.
Jonah 2:7 When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.
- It was the prophet Jonas being in the belly of the whale 3 days and 3 nights!
- It was Jonah being dead but then made alive.
- It was that the people of Nineveh repented at the preaching of Jonah!
- That Nineveh shall condemn them!
And then he makes this statement in verse 41…. “Behold, a greater than Jonas is here”.
Why is Jesus greater….Because:
- Jonas Spoke the word that saves, but Jesus is THE WORD that saves.
- Jonas was raised by Jesus and had no power to raise himself or others, but Jesus has the power to raise himself and the power to raise others.
Amen, praise God for the cross and the shed blood of God on the cross and the power of that blood to raise us up when that trump is blown!!!!!
Even though someone may be dead in trespasses and sins, God makes away for all that accept him to be passed from death to life and be made free indeed!!!
John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
2 Tim 1:10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:
“Behold, a greater than Jonas is here”.
Now lets get on to the next sign.
In the first part of Matt 12:42 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon;
I think it would be good to look at this queens visit. So please bear with me as we read these 12 verses
2 Chr 9:1 And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to prove Solomon with hard questions at Jerusalem, with a very great company, and camels that bare spices, and gold in abundance, and precious stones: and when she was come to Solomon, she communed with him of all that was in her heart.
2 Chr 9:2 And Solomon told her all her questions: and there was nothing hid from Solomon which he told her not.
2 Chr 9:3 And when the queen of Sheba had seen the wisdom of Solomon, and the house that he had built,
2 Chr 9:4 And the meat of his table, and the sitting of his servants, and the attendance of his ministers, and their apparel; his cupbearers also, and their apparel; and his ascent by which he went up into the house of the LORD; there was no more spirit in her.
2 Chr 9:5 And she said to the king, [It was] a true report which I heard in mine own land of thine acts, and of thy wisdom:
2 Chr 9:6 Howbeit I believed not their words, until I came, and mine eyes had seen [it]: and, behold, the one half of the greatness of thy wisdom was not told me: [for] thou exceedest the fame that I heard.
2 Chr 9:7 Happy [are] thy men, and happy [are] these thy servants, which stand continually before thee, and hear thy wisdom.
2 Chr 9:8 Blessed be the LORD thy God, which delighted in thee to set thee on his throne, [to be] king for the LORD thy God: because thy God loved Israel, to establish them for ever, therefore made he thee king over them, to do judgment and justice.
2 Chr 9:9 And she gave the king an hundred and twenty talents of gold, and of spices great abundance, and precious stones: neither was there any such spice as the queen of Sheba gave king Solomon.
2Chr 9:10 And the servants also of Huram, and the servants of Solomon, which brought gold from Ophir, brought algum trees and precious stones.
2Chr 9:11 And the king made [of] the algum trees terraces to the house of the LORD, and to the king’s palace, and harps and psalteries for singers: and there were none such seen before in the land of Judah.
2 Chr 9:12 And king Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba all her desire, whatsoever she asked, beside [that] which she had brought unto the king. So she turned, and went away to her own land, she and her servants.
I want you to notice what the Queen of Sheba did. (vs.1) she communed with him of all that was in her heart. She held nothing back! That points a finger right at this church age! We live in an age that refuses to give God everything!
- She saw Solomons great wisdom in ruling!
- She saw his ministers, cupbearers, servants and how they were dressed!
- She said she did not believe what she heard about him in her own land!
- Then she said in 2 Chr 9:6 Howbeit I believed not their words, until I came, and mine eyes had seen [it]: and, behold, the one half of the greatness of thy wisdom was not told me: [for] thou exceedest the fame that I heard. She believed!
- She was amazed at how happy Solomons servants were to serve him.!
- She gave to Solomon! 2 Chr 9:9 And she gave the king an hundred and twenty talents of gold, and of spices great abundance, and precious stones: neither was there any such spice as the queen of Sheba gave king Solomon.
Jesus said The Queen, a pagan Ethiopian queen will condemn them!
She saw the:
- Greatness of a king.
- Riches of the king.
- Generosity of the king.
And Jesus says
“Behold, a greater than Solomon is here”.
Jesus and His:
- Grace is greater than Solomons!
- Kingdom is mightier than Solomons!
- Mercy is greater than Solomons!
- Wisdom is greater than Solomons!
- Power is greater than Solomons!
- Generosity to his Servants better than Solomon!
“Behold, a greater than Solomon is here”.
So why not just submit to a Saviour that has the power to pass you from death to life and a Saviour that will treat you better than you can even imagine!
Luke 11:9 says And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
Jesus wants you to call on him so he can be your Saviour.
Rev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
Lost…. Jesus is knocking right now….He wants to show you his power and he wants to show you his heavenly Kingdom! Call on Him!!!
Saved… Behold…What a great God we serve!
Give him some glory amen…praise him for his power and his riches!
Phil 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Col 1:26-27 [Even] the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: To whom God would make known what [is] the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:
